Merge multiple PDFs

Merge multiple PDFs

Compose Enterprise is going through a design update. The illustrations on this page might be of the old design, but the information is up to date. Thank you for your patience during this update!

It is possible to generate multiple PDFs within one workflow. There may be cases where it is more beneficial to generate PDFs separately and then merge the generated files to one PDF instead of generating one complete PDF directly. An example of such an instance is when a contract consists of multiple parts, and depending on the choices done by the end-user, the contract should include/exclude different parts. PDFs can be merged together in the PDF Merge activity.

In this example, the general nature of merging PDFs will be demonstrated. You can follow the example by having some workflow with two or more PDF Generation (or PDF Generation (templated)) activities.

To merge the PDFs, select the PDF Merge activity and click the Add File button in the Properties panel.

A menu for selecting files appear. Press the Browse button.

All the available PDF activities in the workflow are listed. Select one of the activities with the file you want to merge and press OK twice. The PDF is listed in the properties panel.

Repeat the previous steps for all the PDFs you’d like to merge.

The selected PDFs will now be merged when the workflow passes the PDF Merge activity. The final PDF is by default named merged.pdf, but the file name can be changed in the Properties panel. (The format of the file should still be PDF, hence you will need to keep .pdf).

You have now configured the PDF Merge activity. Remember to save the draft to keep the changes.

The attached workflow can be imported to Compose v. 5.15.1 and newer: Merge_PDF_Template.cng
